Collaborating with IMDA to empower low-income children to kickstart their digital learning journey

Between June 2023 and May 2024, Byte.sg, in partnership with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), successfully rolled out the TechStart programme—a major, year-long initiative dedicated to narrowing the digital divide for young schooling children from low-income households across Singapore. Over the course of 16 comprehensive Saturday morning sessions, the programme established a safe, structured environment for digital exploration. 

For three hours each week, parents entrusted their children to Byte.sg’s care, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in high-quality technical education, completely free of charge. Back then, Singapore was stepping down from its covid19 public restrictions in February 2023.

To maximize accessibility for low-income families, the TechStart programme was decentralized, utilizing public libraries across various neighbourhoods in Singapore. This strategic choice removed commuting barriers for them, bringing world-class digital literacy directly to the heartlands.

The scale of the initiative required a massive, coordinated community effort:
130 Young Learners: Given access to structured pathways in emerging technologies.

120 Dedicated Volunteers: Acting as coaches and facilitators to maintain a highly supportive student-to-teacher ratio

16 Intensive Sessions: Over a 12-month period, ensuring deep knowledge retention rather than just a one-off experience.

The curriculum was carefully scaffolded to guide students from foundational tech literacy to advanced problem-solving. They learnt basic concepts and tackled simple to moderately difficult, modern domains including Coding, Robotics, and Chatbot Design.

Rather than focusing purely on theory, the modules prioritized experiential learning, teaching children how to build, test, and refine their own digital creations. To sustain motivation and validate their hard work, milestones were celebrated incrementally; at the conclusion of each technical topic, students were formally awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

The sustained success of the TechStart programme highlights the power of public-community partnerships in driving social mobility. By equipping children from less-advantaged backgrounds with critical digital competencies, Byte.sg and IMDA have laid the groundwork for these students to confidently navigate a technology-driven future alongside their peers.
